Silent Vocal Exercises

We're focusing on vocal technique in today's post. There's a great way to build up lung capacity, breathing control,  and diaphragm strength using a simple breathing exercise. And, it can be done in complete silence - so if you're nervous, or maybe in an environment where you want to practice but don't feel like belting it out you can do the following:

  • Make sure your posture is good. Chest out, spine straight. Head facing forward with next and shoulders relaxed. Push your shoulders back a little and maintain the position. Make sure you are comfortable, not tense.
  • Inhale a deep breath through your nose filling your lungs from bottom to top. Mouth should be closed. You should feel your diaphragm pulling tight.
  • Hold the breath for about half a second if possible. As you get better at this exercise you can hold the breathe slightly longer to suit.
  • Release the breath slowly through parted lips. Don't let the air rush out. Control the airflow releasing the breath smoothly and evenly.
  • Try to maintain just a little air in reserve before going for the next breath.
  • Repeat 10 times (or whatever).

Try to do this exercise often to really build up your breath control and general physiology for singing. Last up, we're going to throw in a little fan-art humour we created. Enjoy.
