Dual Vocal Harmony

An effective way of creating vocal harmonies for two persons is quite simple. Have one person sing the lyrics remaining on a drone note. Have the other person sing a melody line that floats around that drone note.

In the example below you can see two vocal lines. The key is D Major. The first vocal line sings a rhythmic drone pattern using only the 'D' note. The second vocal line is a typical melodic approach to singing. This is a great way to create a simple vocal harmony for more than one singer. If you are in a band and one of your musicians can hold a note why not give this a shot in your own songwriting. The root note of the key you are in would be the simplest note of choice but you could experiment with other notes and see how your harmonies sound by changing the drone note only.
